The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) underwent a transformative architectural project, seamlessly integrating a 10-story expansion with the original Mario Botta designed building. The renowned architecture firm Snøhetta was responsible for this ambitious endeavor, addressing several architectural challenges along the way. The expansion increased the gallery space to almost three times its original size, providing SFMOMA with the capacity to showcase more of its modern and contemporary artworks. The new building was meticulously designed to be more welcoming and interconnected with the city, featuring free public access to ground-floor galleries and a commitment to free admission for visitors aged 18 and younger.
The architectural highlight of the expansion is the iconic eastern façade crafted from over 700 locally fabricated fiberglass reinforced polymer panels. Inspired by the surrounding waters and fog of the San Francisco Bay, the rippled surface of the façade beautifully captures and reflects light. Additionally, the design of the museum incorporates day-lit staircases, comfortable gallery spaces, and terraces that provide visitors with moments of repose and breathtaking vistas of the city. The overall vision for the SFMOMA expansion was to create an intimate and engaging gathering space that fosters a strong connection between the visitors and the museum, ultimately resulting in a remarkable architectural achievement that reflects the vibrant spirit of San Francisco.
